Devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria

This message is being shared on behalf of Don Lovisa, president, Durham College.

Dear colleagues and students,

We are deeply saddened to see the devastating impact of the earthquakes and subsequent aftershocks in Türkiye and Syria. Our thoughts are with our students and employees, their families and our broader community, who have family and friends in these regions.

Our Durham College community extends far beyond our campuses, and, when devastating events like this happen, it is felt deeply here as well. In times of crisis, it is reassuring to see how our community comes together to support each other. I want to remind you that confidential counselling services are always available for employees and students. Links to resources are below.

And while the full extent of the damage has yet to be determined, many Canadian and global organizations are working to deliver emergency relief and to get help to those impacted by the earthquakes as quickly as possible. Donations are being accepted by:

Littering, dangerous driving reported at Whitby Landmark parking lot

To support students and staff at the Whitby campus, Durham College (DC) secured an off-site parking contract with Landmark Cinemas and has provided complimentary shuttle service at no extra cost.

Maintenance staff have reported that members of our campus community are still leaving large quantities of garbage in the Landmark parking lot.

In addition, a number of our people have been observed driving dangerously and at high rates of speed in the parking lot.

If this unacceptable behavior continues, the contract with DC will be terminated.

Please do your part to keep this parking option available for all DC students and staff and to ensure that we are respectful of this property and those who maintain it.

Applications open for all students for $5,000 grant to support urban agriculture initiative

This message is being sent on behalf of Brenna Ireland, partnership manager, Barrett Centre of Innovation in Sustainable Urban Agriculture.

If you’re eager to make an impact on how our food is grown, RBC and Durham College’s (DC) Barrett Centre of Innovation in Sustainable Urban Agriculture have teamed up to give you an exciting new grant opportunity to do just that.

The RBC Urban Agriculture Work Integrated Learning Program will provide $5,000 of funding to 10 DC student-led initiatives that support urban agriculture – any farming or food production done in an urban area.

Any project that supports urban agriculture within the community and aligns with the Barrett Centre’s priorities is eligible.

The grants are open to all DC students who can lend their unique experience and knowledge to projects that will further the development of this important practice. Maybe you’re a Marketing student with a great idea on how to promote urban agriculture initiatives, or an Architectural Technology student thinking of new ways to incorporate green spaces into buildings. We are excited to see the scope and range of how DC students can engage in this field.

Applications are open from January 30 to February 24. You can apply online here

Successful applicants will be chosen in early March, and the projects can begin as soon as they’re awarded. The final project milestone must be achieved by September 1. An event this fall will celebrate the successful applicants and their work, allow them to demonstrate their project and network with other students, faculty, and industry.

For more information on the program, eligibility and to apply, visit this website or email Brenna Ireland.

National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia

Sunday, January 29, marks the seventh anniversary of the violent attack that took place at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City, where six people lost their lives, and 19 others were seriously injured during an act of terror.

This day of remembrance reminds us of the work we must do to eradicate Islamophobia, hate and racism in Canada. This Sunday, you’re encouraged to pay tribute to and remember those lives lost and stand with Canadian Muslims against Islamophobia to create an inclusive and respectful Canadian society. Senseless acts of terror have no place in our world.
