International Women’s Day
March 8 is recognized globally as International Women’s Day, aimed at celebrating women’s and girls’ social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It is also a day to raise awareness of the progress made towards achieving gender equality and the work remaining to be done. The first International Women’s Day took place on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark. The United Nations recognized International Women’s Year in 1975 and began celebrating March 8 as International Women’s Day. Globally, International Women’s Day is a day of unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy, and action.
