Program Overview

Advance your career in human resources (HR) by building on your diploma with the Bachelor of Business Administration – Human Resources Management pathway. Designed for graduates of the Business – Human Resources diploma program, this streamlined route allows you to enter directly into the degree and complete your credential in just three semesters plus, one WIL prep course, and a field placement.

This pathway equips you with advanced skills in critical thinking, leadership, and data-driven decision-making—essential for shaping organizations and meeting global business needs. You’ll deepen your HR expertise through practical strategies for managing change and using data to inform strategic decisions.

Students apply their learning in a 420-hour work-integrated field placement and complete advanced courses in areas such as HR analytics, employment law, project management, and organizational leadership.

Graduates of the pathway qualify for the academic component of the Human Resources Professional Competency Framework (HRPA) certification and are well-positioned for further undergraduate or graduate studies.

Admission Requirements

Qualified graduates of any Ontario College Human Resources Diploma program are eligible for advanced standing into Durham College’s Bachelor of Business Administration – Human Resources Management degree.

To be considered for this pathway, students must:

  • Successfully complete an Ontario College diploma in Human Resources – Business
  • Achieve a minimum overall average of 60% across their diploma courses

Program Details

As organizations respond to evolving social values, employee expectations, and economic priorities, the demand for skilled human resources (HR) professionals continues to grow. Employers are seeking practitioners who can lead initiatives in employee experience, equity, diversity, inclusion, and corporate social responsibility.

This pathway program is designed for graduates of the Business – Human Resources diploma, offering a streamlined route into the Bachelor of Business Administration – Human Resources Management degree. Students receive transfer credit for 16 courses and begin in semester 3, completing the degree in three semesters plus one field placement.

The pathway equips students with advanced, practical knowledge to succeed in diverse business environments. Courses focus on strategic HR planning, employment law, organizational leadership, HR analytics, and project management. Students also complete a 420-hour work-integrated learning placement to gain real-world experience and apply classroom learning in professional settings.

Graduates will be prepared to:

  • Lead change initiatives and make data-informed decisions
  • Develop evidence-based HR policies and practices
  • Support organizational effectiveness in a global business environment

Pathway graduates also qualify for approved credit toward the academic component of the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) and Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designations granted by the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA). Students who achieve an average grade of 70% and a minimum of 65% in each required course meet the coursework requirement to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exams—an essential step toward certification. Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Plan, develop and evaluate talent acquisition and retention strategies and processes to ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
  2. Design performance management programs in alignment with evidence-informed practices to support the attainment of organizational objectives.
  3. Design employee development programs in alignment with evidence-informed practices to optimize organizational learning.
  4. Analyze human resource management processes and labour relations strategies in unionized and non-unionized environments to make recommendations that support productive relations between employees, unions, and management.
  5. Develop and communicate the organization’s total reward strategy and its administration in alignment with the organization’s objectives.
  6. Develop, implement and evaluate Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and practices to ensure compliance with legislation and the health, safety and well-being of the workplace.
  7. Assess the ethical and legal implications of organizational decision-making principles for the purpose of developing and promoting policies that support the equity, diversity, inclusion and accountability of an organization.
  8. Analyze quantitative and qualitative operational, financial, and employee data and metrics to make data-drive human capital related decisions that improve organizational effectiveness.
  9. Develop human capital solutions to business opportunities that maximize performance and support the attainment of organizational objectives.
  10. Recommend human resource management strategies by applying evidence-informed organizational behaviour and cultural theories to effectively support planned and unplanned organizational change.
  11. Work collaboratively, collegially and equitably with diverse members of interprofessional teams using strong communication and leadership strategies to support stakeholder interests, organizational goals and strategic projects.
  12. Assess professional and interpersonal goals to determine learning needs for ongoing competence in human resources professional practice.

Experiential Learning

As part of the pathway into the Bachelor of Business Administration – Human Resources Management program, students complete a mandatory 14-week, 420-hour field placement. This work-integrated learning experience provides a valuable opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a professional HR setting, build industry connections, and gain hands-on experience that supports career readiness.

Program Transfer, Degree Completion and Additional Credentials

Qualified graduates of any Ontario College Human Resources Diploma program are eligible for advanced standing into Durham College’s Bachelor of Business Administration – Human Resources Management degree through a specialized pathway.

Students who meet the admission requirements, including successful completion of the diploma and a minimum overall average of 60%, will begin the degree in semester 3 and follow a modified Program of Study (POS).

Pathway students will complete:

  • Three semesters of core degree courses
  • One semester of field placement (420 hours)

This streamlined POS allows diploma graduates to build on their foundational knowledge and complete the degree efficiently while gaining advanced skills in strategic HR management, analytics, and leadership.

  • Rachael Authors

    Faculty Member, Faculty of Business and Information Technology

    Rachael Authors brings diverse experience and a strong academic background to her work. With a Life Sciences degree, an Occupational Health and Safety degree, and a Masters in Occupational Therapy, she’s gained a well-rounded understanding of both the scientific and practical aspects of health, safety, and well-being. Rachael’s particular interest in mental health and accommodations during her time in Occupational Therapy adds an important layer to her expertise. Currently, Rachael teaches public health and safety protocols in a lab setting, where she combines her hands-on experience with her knowledge to guide others in creating safer, healthier workplaces.

  • Corey Gill

    Faculty Member, Faculty of Business and Information Technology

    With 30 years of experience in Business, Corey Gill specializes in navigating organizational change, managing global workforces, and responsibly leveraging AI and data. He holds an MBA, CHRL, and PMP designation and focuses on innovation, data analytics, and AI in Human Resources. Corey is a Durham College professor, program coordinator, and AI consultant who empowers both students and faculty.

  • Roberta Graham

    Faculty Member, Faculty of Business and Information Technology

    Roberta Graham, a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) with a BA and M.Ed, has over 20 years of executive-level experience managing HR for organizations both nationally and internationally. As a professor in the Faculty of Business and IT for the past 10 years, she is dedicated to student success and creating a positive learning environment. Her expertise lies in strategic HR management - aligning HR practices to enhance organizational effectiveness while promoting employee well-being.

    Hussam is an experienced Professor with a history of working in the higher education environment, along with skills and experiences in industrial engineering and operations management.  Hussam holds a PhD degree with a focus on Sustainable Supply Chain, Inventory and Logistics Management (Mechanical & Industrial Engineering) from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University).
