Program Overview

Step into a rewarding career in human resources (HR) with a Bachelor of Business Administration (Human Resources Management). This three-year degree equips you with critical thinking, leadership, and data-driven decision-making skills that will help shape organizations and meet global business needs.

Students develop the critical thinking skills required to be successful HR practitioners in all sectors by learning practical strategies to effectively manage change and use data to inform strategic organizational decision-making. Students apply the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom through a 420-hour work-integrated learning opportunity.

Graduates qualify for the academic component of the Human Resources Professional Competency Framework (Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA)) certification and for application to relevant undergraduate and graduate programs.

    Program Details

    As a result of shifting social values, employee expectations and economic priorities, organizations face immense pressure to increase their focus on employee experience, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and corporate social responsibility. Organizations require highly-skilled human resources (HR) practitioners capable of identifying and navigating the path forward for continued success in this new world of work.

    In response to this industry need, this three-year degree program equips students with the in-depth and practical knowledge required to succeed in the HR field by contributing effectively to the management of different business environments. 

    The Bachelor of Business Administration (Human Resources Management) program helps students develop the critical thinking skills required to be successful HR practitioners in all sectors. The program is multidisciplinary in scope and prepares graduates to fill leadership and management roles by learning practical strategies to effectively manage change and use data to inform strategic organizational decision-making. Students will be prepared to work effectively with various communities and in organizational and institutional settings, leveraging their business acumen and understanding of organizational functions when engaging as HR practitioners.

    Through a mandatory 420-hour work integrated learning opportunity, students gain valuable hands-on experience to help support their entry into an HR career.

    Graduates will have the knowledge and skills necessary to positively impact organizations by developing evidence-informed policies and processes to support the adoption of industry best practices. Graduates will be ready to enter the workforce with the skills needed to offer strategic direction to employers to address current labour market needs and future industry needs in a global business environment.

    Program Learning Outcomes

    1. Plan, develop and evaluate talent acquisition and retention strategies and processes to ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
    2. Design performance management programs in alignment with evidence-informed practices to support the attainment of organizational objectives.
    3. Design employee development programs in alignment with evidence-informed practices to optimize organizational learning.
    4. Analyze human resource management processes and labour relations strategies in unionized and non-unionized environments to make recommendations that support productive relations between employees, unions, and management.
    5. Develop and communicate the organization’s total reward strategy and its administration in alignment with the organization’s objectives.
    6. Develop, implement and evaluate Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and practices to ensure compliance with legislation and the health, safety and well-being of the workplace.
    7. Assess the ethical and legal implications of organizational decision-making principles for the purpose of developing and promoting policies that support the equity, diversity, inclusion and accountability of an organization.
    8. Analyze quantitative and qualitative operational, financial, and employee data and metrics to make data-drive human capital related decisions that improve organizational effectiveness.
    9. Develop human capital solutions to business opportunities that maximize performance and support the attainment of organizational objectives.
    10. Recommend human resource management strategies by applying evidence-informed organizational behaviour and cultural theories to effectively support planned and unplanned organizational change.
    11. Work collaboratively, collegially and equitably with diverse members of interprofessional teams using strong communication and leadership strategies to support stakeholder interests, organizational goals and strategic projects.
    12. Assess professional and interpersonal goals to determine learning needs for ongoing competence in human resources professional practice.

      Experiential Learning

      Between years two and three, students participate in a mandatory 14-week, 420-hour work term, which provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a real-world setting.

      Program Transfer, Degree Completion and Additional Credentials

      Qualified graduates from the Business – Human Resources diploma program will receive credit transfer for 16 courses in the Bachelor of Business Administration – Human Resources Management program. Students will join the program and complete the core courses in three semesters (plus one semester of field placement), following a specialized Program of Study (POS).

      Graduates must have achieved a minimum grade of 50 per cent in their courses in the diploma program to receive the transfer credit(s).

      • Rachael Authors

        Faculty Member, Faculty of Business and Information Technology

        Rachael Authors brings diverse experience and a strong academic background to her work. With a Life Sciences degree, an Occupational Health and Safety degree, and a Masters in Occupational Therapy, she’s gained a well-rounded understanding of both the scientific and practical aspects of health, safety, and well-being. Rachael’s particular interest in mental health and accommodations during her time in Occupational Therapy adds an important layer to her expertise. Currently, Rachael teaches public health and safety protocols in a lab setting, where she combines her hands-on experience with her knowledge to guide others in creating safer, healthier workplaces.

      • Corey Gill

        Faculty Member, Faculty of Business and Information Technology

        With 30 years of experience in Business, Corey Gill specializes in navigating organizational change, managing global workforces, and responsibly leveraging AI and data. He holds an MBA, CHRL, and PMP designation and focuses on innovation, data analytics, and AI in Human Resources. Corey is a Durham College professor, program coordinator, and AI consultant who empowers both students and faculty.

      • Roberta Graham

        Faculty Member, Faculty of Business and Information Technology

        Roberta Graham, a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) with a BA and M.Ed, has over 20 years of executive-level experience managing HR for organizations both nationally and internationally.         Faculty Member, Faculty of Business and Information Technology

        Hussam is an experienced Professor with a history of working in the higher education environment, along with skills and experiences in industrial engineering and operations management.  Hussam holds a PhD degree with a focus on Sustainable Supply Chain, Inventory and Logistics Management (Mechanical & Industrial Engineering) from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University).

        Dr. Brad Niblett, BA, MBA, MSc, DBA is a faculty member at Durham College’s School of Business, specializing in Human Resources Leadership, Organizational Development, and Strategic Management. With extensive executive experience in talent development, workforce strategy, and corporate leadership, Dr. Niblett brings a deep understanding of HR best practices, ethical leadership, and global business culture to his teaching and research.

        Howard is an experienced professional with extensive experience working at the post-secondary level. He has taught Business and Engineering at multiple colleges and universities, in various countries. He has a wealth of industry experience having worked in operations management and process improvement, and a passion for working with students.
