Peer Wellness Reps Student leaders play a pivotal role in creating a safe, inclusive and engaging environment on campus. Peer Wellness Reps are CHWC’s Student Leaders who understand the DC student experience and have a passion to help create an institutional climate of health, wellness and social justice. What is a Peer Wellness Rep? Peer Wellness Reps engage in health education outreach and group-based services and activities with other students. Peer Wellness Reps are a social and informative support who can provide interactive, wellness-related information and resources. This role does not give advice or counsel, but provides education and resources to campus. Our Peer Wellness Reps: Create and conduct intentional and reflective health education outreach across campus on a variety of wellness related themes (i.e. healthy relationships, stress management, nutrition, safer substance use, sexual well-being and general health education). Help maintain a social media presence Promote campus services and resources Engage in conversations about wellness Generally, Peer Support is based in shared lived experiences and recovery principles which helps us develop, grow and heal. Some key features of peer support and personal recovery are aligned with the CHIME framework of: Connectedness, Hope and Optimism, Identity, Meaning, and Empowerment. As the value of such mutual relationships has been recognized, more formal peer roles (i.e., peer support specialists, peer facilitators) have been created in various workplace settings making this a personal and professional development opportunity. What is Health and Wellness Promotion? Health promotion takes an “upstream approach” which implies identifying the root cause of health issues to increase potential benefits for health outcomes. This upstream approach is based in prevention and education designed to advance the health of students and the campus community. It the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health promotion is focused on preventative rather than curative, and focuses on changing behavioral risk factors.
