  • On November 8, we pause to recognize Indigenous Veterans Day, a time to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis veterans and active members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Throughout Canada’s military history, an estimated 12,000 Indigenous people volunteered for military service, serving on the front lines in every major conflict involving Canada. Their contributions reflect a remarkable legacy of dedication, resilience, and commitment to protecting the freedoms enjoyed today.

The support of Indigenous communities extended far beyond the battlefield. On the home front, Indigenous people donated money, food, and clothing to support war efforts, while Indigenous women played vital roles as nurses, air traffic controllers, and radio operators.

We also acknowledge notable Indigenous veterans such as Charles “Checker” Tomkins, a Code Talker during the Second World War; Henry Louis Norwest, one of Canada’s most accomplished First World War snipers; and Mary Greyeyes Reid, the first Indigenous woman to enlist in the Canadian Army.

This Indigenous Veterans Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to learn about and reflect on the contributions of Indigenous Peoples in military service. Their stories are an important part of Canada’s history and a lasting reminder of the sacrifices made in pursuit of peace and freedom.
