Essential Skills Workshops

Durham College’s Essential Skills Workshops are flexible, personalized, and supportive programs that help learners prepare to meet the needs and challenges of future academic and/or employment goals. Funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development of Ontario (MLITSD) as part of Employment Ontario’s Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program, all programming is completely free of charge and designed to align with the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF) while providing learning opportunities that are task-based and applicable to real-world situations.

Upon completion of the program you will:

  • Receive a Durham College microcredential that you can share on your resume and/or LinkedIn page
  • Be connected with a community employment service that will help you write your resume and practice interview skills so you get noticed by employers
  • Register for up to two free industry-specific certifications such as Smart Serve and Safe Food Handling

Who is eligible?

In order to register, participants must:

  • Be 19 years of age or older;
  • Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents, residing in Ontario;
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number;
  • Have the necessary English Literacy & Numeracy skills to succeed in self-directed learning;
  • Have regular access to a computer & internet (some certifications also require a webcam for test proctoring).

Registration Process

All learners are required to complete our online entry assessments, before beginning with the programming. The entry assessment is used to measure what common workplace/school-based skills learners are strong in, and which may need further development.

The registration paperwork that must be completed, will be completed during the first day of the in-person program. As a government-funded, Employment Ontario program you will be asked to provide personal information (incl. SIN), and some basic background information on your education and employment history. All of your details are kept strictly confidential and are not used by Durham College for any other purpose beyond registering you with Employment Ontario.

Once registered, you are entitled to take as many of our available workshops as you choose!

Learning Plan

Using the entry assessment information, along with your goals in taking the workshops, the Facilitator will develop your personalized Learner Plan. All of the activities you complete during your workshops are chosen specifically with your personal growth in mind!

Current Available Workshops

Note: While the employment certificates may be your primary goal for participating in our programming, please be mindful that they are only a component(s) of a workshop, and other content must be completed in order to progress to the certification.

Food Service Industry Workshop

The Food Service Industry Workshop focuses on building and developing the knowledge and basic skills necessary to succeed in the food & beverage sector. Considering both front and back-of-house (dining room and kitchen), the workshops will focus on the most commonly used reading and math skills, the ability to find and use information, and will develop an awareness of how to effectively work with others. Learners will also get hands-on experience using a Point-of-Sale system in the classroom. Individuals will also receive Government of Ontario Approved Certifications relevant to the industry (Safe Food Handling & Smart Serve).

Retail Industry Workshop

The Retail Industry Workshop focuses on building and developing the knowledge and basic skills necessary to succeed in the Retail Industry. Our workshop provides an opportunity to build the interpersonal skills needed to effectively communicate with both customers and co-workers. This training will focus on increasing literacy relating to money math, cash handling, and customer service skills. Learners will also get hands-on experience using a Point-of-Sale system in the classroom. Individuals will also receive Government of Ontario Approved Certifications relevant to the industry.

  • Ajax: April 8 to 19, 2024, at Agilec at 250 Bayly Street West, Unit 19, Ajax, ON

Warehousing Industry Workshop

Our Warehousing workshop focuses on the Essential Skills needed to work in the Warehousing industry. This training will help improve learners’ document use, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and ability to find and use information. The workshop is intended to help increase your confidence and prepare you to work in the Warehouse industry.  Learners will have an opportunity to complete some industry training using Virtual Reality headsets. Participants will also receive two Government of Ontario Approved Certifications relevant to the industry.

Digital skills for employment WORKSHOP

The Digital Skills for Employment Workshop is designed to build your skills and knowledge in the programs needed for employment. It will expose you to the software and technology used in the workplace. Your individualized learning plan targets the skills you want to build and allows you to work at your own pace during the workshop. You can choose to improve your skills in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Windows, video conferencing programs, e-mail, and the internet. Laptops will be supplied for use in class. If you are new or have limited experience with computers, this workshop is for you!
