Electric Drive Vehicle Technician Program Details

For more than two decades, Canada’s clean transport industry has been the fastest-growing industry within the country’s clean energy sector. This growth has created unprecedented demand for qualified EV technicians across the country, with industry experts projecting thousands of new positions in the coming years. With significant investments, Ontario is set to become a hub for EV manufacturing, and Durham College’s (DC) Electric Drive Vehicle Technician (EDVT) graduates will be well-positioned to capitalize on this growing market.

To meet the increasing demand for skilled EV Automotive Technicians, DC’s EDVT program is specifically designed to equip students with the technical knowledge required to succeed in this industry by exploring the rise of zero and low emission propulsion systems, such as battery electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and hydrogen technology, and study the effects of emerging trends in the automotive industry. The Electric Vehicle Technician course curriculum was developed in consultation with industry partners to ensure graduates possess the skills employers seek.

By building on their understanding of conventional vehicle systems inside DC’s state-of-the-art Vanhaverbeke Family EV Training Centre, students develop expertise in diagnosing and servicing electric and hybrid vehicles from various manufacturers. The curriculum is future-focused and covers major components like EV powertrains, batteries, regenerative braking, fuel cells, and safety systems. Students gain a deep understanding of how these vehicles operate and how to maintain them effectively through a 56-hour EV technician capstone project. Graduates are ready to meet the needs of the evolving automotive industry and are prepared for exciting and rewarding careers in the EV service and maintenance sector.

Through the Electric Vehicle Technician program, students will:

  • Develop comprehensive diagnostic skills for high-voltage electrical systems used in modern electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • Master safety protocols for working with EV battery systems, including proper handling and service procedures.
  • Gain hands-on experience with regenerative braking systems, power electronics, and electric drivetrain components.
  • Learn to utilize advanced diagnostic equipment designed for electric vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Understand the operation and maintenance requirements of hydrogen fuel cell technology.
  • Apply specialized software diagnostics to identify and resolve issues with EV control systems.
  • Complete a capstone project demonstrating proficiency in EV service techniques required by industry employers.
  • Build professional connections through industry partnerships and field placements with leading automotive service providers.
  • Acquire industry-recognized credentials that validate electric vehicle technician training and expertise.

Graduates with electric vehicle technician training enter the workforce with a distinct competitive advantage, possessing both traditional automotive knowledge and cutting-edge EV expertise. The program’s hands-on approach, industry partnerships, and state-of-the-art facilities will give you the practical abilities and technical understanding needed to excel in this growing field.
