Ministry-approved title: Radio and Audio Production
The Radio and Audio Production (previously known as Broadcasting – Radio and Contemporary Media) program prepares students for careers on air, behind the mic or driving the story in broadcasting and digital media production.
Students build practical skills across audio, video and digital media, including scripting, announcing, studio and field production, editing, podcasting, live streaming and social media content creation. The program also introduces the business side of broadcasting, including advertising sales, promotions, programming and brand development.
From day one, students work at Riot Radio, Durham College’s live campus station, writing, producing and broadcasting for a real audience. This hands-on experience provides authentic industry practice in a live media environment.
A 240-hour field placement at a radio station, television station or media organization provides further professional experience and industry connections, supporting a strong transition into the workforce.

This isn't a classroom — it's a working media environment. Durham College's professional-grade facilities in the L-Wing give students the tools and space to produce, record and broadcast.
The L-Wing Lab puts students behind an industry-standard radio board with a sound-isolated whisper booth for clean, professional voice recording. Across the hall, the Production Studio is fully equipped with professional cameras, a teleprompter, a master mixing board and a full green screen. The Mixed Reality Capture (MRC) Studio and Global Classroom open up immersive and international experiences, and Riot Radio puts students on air for a real audience.
Students complete a seven-week field placement at the end of the fourth semester, gaining real-world experience at a radio station, television station or other media organization.
Radio and Audio Production (previously known as Broadcasting – Radio and Contemporary Media) students build real-world experience through three distinct opportunities. Through TeachingCity Oshawa — a collaboration between the City of Oshawa and Durham College — students work on applied community projects with direct coaching and feedback from professors, developing the teamwork and soft skills the industry demands. With Rogers TV, students can volunteer in live and studio television production, taking on roles such as camera operator, audio operator, floor director, switcher, graphics operator, production assistant, or on-air talent. And at Riot Radio, one of the first visual radio stations in North America, students create and host their own shows, work as assistant technicians, and broadcast to a real campus audience — applying their skills in a live environment from day one.
