I graduated the first year that Gary Polonsky was president and I was an employee when he retired.
I have been with Durham College a relatively short period of time (4 years), but in that time I have had the privilege to work with some inspiring colleagues. My work with the students in a front line capacity has always been my favourite part of the job! Seeing students overcome challenges to reach their goals holds the fondest memories for me and sharing genuine comradery with my co-workers makes working at Durham College a productive, positive part of my life.
I have seen the Gordon Willey building expand to include the South Wing then to include UOIT in 2002. I have also watched as the Simcoe building lost portables that gave way to a wonderful expansion of glass and steal in a modern design. The Simcoe building is old and worn and does need replacing but the corner stone or stones on the outside wall that faces Simcoe street – the bolder/stones – to me are what always reminds me of Durham College and where it started from. It will be sad to see the Simcoe building go but it is understandable.
As a child of ten years old in 1977 I used to come to Durham College to drop off my mother, at the only building at the time, the Simcoe building, for night classes. I attended and graduated from the first Early Childhood Education program from 1985-1987. In 1998 I started working part-time for the college and have worked part-time for them since.
Seeing my students succeed is a great honour for me as a professor. I enjoy attending convocation to celebrate their achievements while studying at Durham College.
