PSW Accelerated FAQS Updates to the FAQs will be made as information becomes available. Please continue to check back. Funding and OSAP WILL I RECEIVE FUNDS DIRECTLY? No, Durham College will receive the funding that covers your tuition, books and supplies and will apply these funds to your student account to pay your assessed tuition, book, and supplies fees. Is additional funding available for students who cannot complete the PSW accelerated program within the allotted time frame? No, students who begin this specialized program are expected to complete within the timelines provided. Can I apply for OSAP for the accelerated PSW program? Yes, the PSW – Accelerated program is an OSAP eligible program, therefore, you can apply for OSAP if you are registered in the PSW accelerated program. Do I have to report the funding I am receiving while in the PSW program to OSAP? The Financial Aid Office will report the grants you are receiving for the tuition, books, and supplies to OSAP on your behalf. This could trigger a recalculation of the amount of loans and grants you are eligible for from OSAP. If I am in a paid placement, do I have to report the earnings on my OSAP application? Funding you receive for your paid placement is considered earned income. As per current OSAP policy, students are expected to report earned income when it exceeds $5,600 per term. How do I get the additional funds for transportation, child care etc.? Midway through the semester, actively participating students will be eligible to receive funding to assist with the cost of supplies, these funds will be disbursed to you in the form of an e-transfer after your program supply fees are assessed. When you commence your placement you will also be eligible to receive $600 to support your associated transportation and/or child care costs. Important Dates WHEN DO CLASSES AND PLACEMENT START? PSWA Classes start on April 5, 2021. Placement starts on July 5, 2021. PSWB Classes start on May 10, 2021. Placement starts on August 9, 2021. PSWC Classes start on June 14, 2021. Placement starts on September 13, 2021. PSWD Classes starts on August 16, 2021. Placement starts on November 15, 2021. What are the important dates for my program? Please click here to see the important dates based on your program start. Registration and Timetables HOW DO I REGISTER? The School of Health and Community Services will register you in the program timetable. Following registration, you will receive an email notification from Enrolment Services. You will be registered into your theory and placement during registration. IS THERE ANOTHER TIMETABLE OPTION? There is only one timetable option for each intake and no opportunity to change classes. HOW MUCH TIME CAN I EXPECT TO SPEND IN CLASS EACH WEEK? There are approximately 28 hours of class time required for this program. About 21 of those hours are scheduled classes (with 3 hours scheduled on-campus) and the remaining 7 are asynchronous in first 12 weeks. In the second 12 weeks, in addition to practicum there is 1 course that is 3 hours which will be asynchronous. There are an additional 25 hours required over the first 12-week student period. WILL I RECEIVE A T2202 FOR MY FEES PAID FOR THE PROGRAM? Yes, you will receive a T2202 for the fees paid in 2021. WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO A HEALTH AND DENTAL PLAN Yes. Students enrolled in this program will be automatically placed in the Durham College Student Inc. (DCSI) health and dental program. Please visit studentvip.ca for information about coverage and the opt-out process. Students who have other coverage can opt out within the first 30 days of their program start date. Coverage dates: PSWA - April 1 – March 2022 PSWB - May – April 2022 PSWC - June – May 2022 Can I add courses to my schedule? This is an accelerated program, with a high volume of work, it is not advised to add any other courses to your schedule. Should you chose to do so you will be required to pay additional fees that are not supported by the government funding. What if I need to drop a course in this program? Can I transfer a credit into this program? Student may be able to apply for a credit transfer in some PSW Accelerated courses, however, you must maintain a full-time course load to continue in the program. Can I PLAR any of my courses? Given the accelerated nature of this program students are not eligible to PLAR any courses. Post Admission Requirements WHAT ARE THE POST ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS? A clear and current Criminal Reference Check (CRC) with Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS). Current Level C CPR from a recognized provider and mask fit testing from a recognized provider. Current Emergency First Aid Certification from a recognized provider. Entry immunization form completed by a health-care provider. Placement ARE STUDENTS PAID FOR PLACEMENT? Yes, PSWA, PSWB, PSWC, and PSWD students will have access to paid placements. WHERE WILL I DO MY PLACEMENT? Placements will take place at long-term facilities in the Durham Region. Can I work at the same time as doing my paid placement? The Ontario government has currently mandated that workers in long term care homes cannot work at other locations in an attempt to prevent the spread of Covid. Therefore you are unable to work at another place of employment during your 12 week paid placement. Program delivery HOW WILL MY CLASSES BE DELIVERED? With more study hours per week, the accelerated program will use a hybrid model that combines remote learning with in-person practical experience. Classes will consist of virtual classes, asynchronous (non-scheduled) activity and in-person laboratory classes on campus and in long-term care (LTC) settings. After 3 months, students will also be able to participate in paid work placements in long-term homes. HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I EXPECT TO BE IN CLASS? Virtual theory classes are scheduled from Monday to Friday for up to 7 hours of class time per day. Students will attend Oshawa campus for the lab-based 3-hour class. WHERE IS THE LAB LOCATED? The mandatory 3-hour lab class will take place each week in the Centre for Collaborative Education (CFCE) building located on the Oshawa campus. WILL I ACHIEVE THE SAME LEARNING OUTCOMES IN THE ACCELERATED PROGRAM AS I WOULD IN THE TRADITIONAL DELIVERY MODEL? Yes. Students in the accelerated program will graduate with the same credential and meet the same learning outcomes. The 24-week (12 + 12) tuition-free, accelerated PSW program is a modified version of the traditional two semester. Will there be a program orientation? Yes, your program coordinator, Deborah Schuh, will be hosting your orientation on Monday, August 16. The link and time are TBD and will be sent to students directly. TEXTBOOKS AND SUPPLIES How will I get my textbooks and supplies? You will receive codes to access your e-books via email. You will also receive remaining hard copy textbooks and supplies in your first on-campus class. If you choose to withdraw from this program you will be required to return the materials. August program – Monday, August 16 – e-books and Wednesday, August 18 – textbooks and supplies. Are my textbooks covered by my program supply fee? Yes, textbook costs are covered.
