October is Women’s History Month

This month we want to highlight and celebrate the impact of women throughout Canadian history. Find resources on women like

  • Kateri Tekakwitha, North America’s first First Nations saint,
  • Hide Hyodo Shimizu, who was inducted into the Order of Canada for her efforts in educating Japanese-Canadian children in internment camps,
  • Mary Ann Shadd, the first Black woman to publish a newspaper in North America,
  • Angela James, the first openly gay athlete and second black athlete to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and
  • Edna Agnes Ekhivalak Elias, a residential school survivor and member of the Order of Canada for her effort to preserve Nunavut’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
