Durham College President Don Lovisa enjoyed a successful evening on November 17 when he was honoured with the Whitby Chamber of Commerce’s 2011 Business Person Achievement Award following the college’s annual fall convocation ceremony. Lovisa received his award, which recognizes outstanding leadership, achievement and vision and honours the significant contributions of individuals in the business community, at the Annual Peter Perry & Business Achievement Awards Gala, which was held at Heydenshore Pavilion in Whitby, Ontario. He was recognized for his commitment to education; the college’s vibrant research agenda; his leadership and vision for the Whitby campus expansion; his willingness to give back through community involvement; and the impact he has had on the development of Durham Region as a whole. “Don Lovisa has made a tremendous difference in our community,” said Peter LeBel, director of community and marketing services for the Town of Whitby. “His drive and focus to expand learning opportunities for youth, adults and employees is contributing to the Town’s success and more importantly, to secure Whitby and Durham Region’s future.” Lovisa was appointed as the college’s fifth president in 2008, the latest posting in a distinguished post-secondary career that has spanned more than 25 years. Durham College has thrived under his leadership as president and continues to reach new heights, realizing significant strategic growth in students, programs, buildings, learning spaces, community partnerships and reputation. Lovisa was presented the prestigious award in front of hundreds of business and community leaders at the awards gala. “I am both humbled and honoured to have been selected to receive this year’s Business Person Achievement Award,” said Lovisa. “Durham College has been an integral part of this region since 1967 and I am proud of all our recent accomplishments in support of the college’s continued legacy and success of our community.
