This course provides the students with an introduction to the basic theory and skills that are necessary for effective intentional interviewing and counselling. A microskills approach will be taken; students will be introduced to each of the individual communication units one at a time and have opportunities to incorporate them into practice through participation in small group exercises. The focus will be on the counseling skills that comprise the basic listening sequence (BLS), an essential component in the development of a strong therapeutic alliance.
