Painting I

This course introduces technical and aesthetic issues in painting, with an emphasis on various modes of representation, pictorial organization and composition. It establishes a foundation of critical ideas, vocabulary and strategies for the study and practice of the painted image. Students will have their knowledge of the proper use of standard implements, colour theory and paint application refreshed in a series of exercises involving various supports, ie: paper, canvas and panel, while exploring historic and contemporary approaches to self portraiture, the figure, still life and landscape. Participants will benefit from both group and individual instruction.
