Nutrition

This subject will provide the student with an understanding of the nature and function of nutrients, the way in which the body utilizes nutrients and the consequences of deficient or excessive nutrient intake. The relationship between nutritional status with respect to oral and systemic health will be explored including the major biological functions of all basic nutrients.Content will include discussion regarding eating behaviour, food classificationand selection and energy balance. This subject will provide the opportunity for dental hygiene students to have a working knowledge on current and controversial issues in nutrition. An introduction to nutritional counselling will prepare students for dietary planning and analysis for oral/dental and systemic health implications. Theoretical application will include a qualitative and quantitative dietary analysis on a client in the Dental Hygiene clinic. This will include implementation of diet planning principles, client specific recommendations and description of the associated oral and systemic health benefits and/ or risks associated with the findings.
