In this course, the student will explore the changing face of mental health care in Canada and the evolution of care for those who suffer with cognitive impairment such as delirium and dementia and/or mental health challenges. The student will learn to recognize signs and symptoms and begin to appreciate the challenges experienced by individuals and their families who are living and coping with such cognitive and mental health issues.
The student will explore strategies for communicating with and caring for these individuals using different models of care to manage clients' personal expressions and unusual behaviours in a safe and respectful way. Additionally, the student will become familiar with community resources available to support the individual coping with cognitive impairment and/or mental health issues, their families and care-providers.
