Safety, Modernization and Alteration

This course aims to introduce skilled trades' students to current professional safety practices in industry. In this course students will learn fundamentals of hazards in the hoistway, machine rooms and pits. Students will define safety fundamentals of babbitting, environmental hazards and safety aspects when using oxy – acetylene equipment. Students will learn about material handling, substance abuse, environmental hazards and types of communication techniques in the industry. Students will identify and describe public safety requirements and Ministry of labour and TSSA procedures in regards to the Elevating Devices industry. Students will be able to explain and describe the use of ladders, scaffolding, work platforms, along with rigging and hoisting equipment in accordance with government safety regulations, manufactures recommendations and specifications within approved industry standards. Finally students will identify relevant information pertaining to modernization and alteration within the elevating devices industry.
