More than 440 diploma-to-degree opportunities now available for students OSHAWA, Ont. – As part of its commitment to providing students with opportunities to further their education here in Ontario and around the world, Durham College recently launched a new web page to highlight the more than 440 diploma-to-degree opportunities it has in place with universities across Ontario, Canada and around the world. This includes 25 agreements in place with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), with whom the college shares its Oshawa campus, that allow qualified graduates of one-, two- and three-year Durham College programs to enter numerous UOIT undergraduate degree programs with advanced standing, The web page – located at www.durhamcollege.ca/transferguide – provides details about each agreement including how to apply credits earned at Durham College toward numerous university or college degrees as well as methods for gaining additional credentials through Durham College. Listing all transfer agreements alphabetically by Durham College program, the page also includes a link to each transfer institution, the transfer degree(s) available and the minimum academic requirement necessary to enrol. “This is truly a trendsetting tool for understanding the transfer system and one that will be of great benefit to not only college students, but also those who’ve completed university studies as well,” said Don Lovisa, president, Durham College and co-chair, Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer. “Durham College is pleased to be a leader in Ontario as transfer agreements are increasingly developed to the benefit of students.” Currently the page features 446 degree completion opportunities for post-secondary institutions in Canada and throughout the world including McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario; University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, British Columbia; Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan; the Irish Institutes of Technology in Ireland; Griffith University in South East Queensland, Australia and UOIT. The college also offers a number of graduate certificate or fast-track programs for students who have completed a diploma or degree and are interested in enhancing their employability. College partnering with OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network to register stem cell donors for patients in need Oshawa, Ont. – Durham College is partnering with the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network on Tuesday, February 12 to host Get Swabbed, an event designed to add registrants to Canada’s stem cell registry by swabbing the inside of students’ cheeks and sending a tissue sample to Canadian Blood Services to identify potential stem cell donors. The Get Swabbed program is focused on increasing the number of optimal donors in the OneMatch Network. While there are more than 330,000 Canadians currently registered with the network, nearly 1,000 patients continue to search for a matching stem cell donor. In addition, 75 per cent of registrants are Caucasian and 25 per cent are from Canada’s many diverse ethnic groups with stem cells from donors who are young (ages 17-35), male and ethnically diverse in the highest demand. Research shows that younger stem cells from male donors affect patients better post-transplant and patients are most likely to find a suitable match with a donor of the same ethnic background. As a result, Get Swabbed is aimed at increasing the number of young, diverse and male donors to better support patients in need. “Young donors have the biggest potential to save the life of a patient anywhere in the world,” said Hailu Mulatu, co-ordinator, Donor Management, OneMatch. “We are inspired by all the students who have embraced our mission to help more patients in need. Registering is so easy and the impact is life-changing.” To register as a potential stem cell donor and to find out more about the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network, interested individuals can visit www.onematch.ca and www.facebook.com/onematch. The PLS, which officially opened its doors in September 2012 and is the first public post-secondary presence in Pickering’s 200-year history, is designed to meet the needs of students looking to further their credentials in an environment focused on mature, professional learners. “I am extremely pleased to continue this partnership with the City of Pickering and Centennial College in the operation of this joint learning centre,” said Lovisa. “This wonderful facility reflects our commitment to providing high-demand programs and is already providing exciting, unique and convenient educational opportunities to current students and will continue to do so for future students in Pickering and across the Greater Toronto Area.” The grand opening event, which featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, provided attendees with an opportunity to learn more about the unique learning environment offered by the Centre including tours of the facility. “We’re delighted to be working together with Durham College to bring accessible post-secondary education to our neighbours in the community of Pickering,” said Buller. “This is a ready-made facility for commuters who want to further their education while remaining close to home. In addition it offers a flexible learning environment that includes continuing education courses in the evenings and on weekends and several workshops to better serve students. “With its location at the north end of our landmark pedestrian bridge, the Pickering Learning Site represents a unique fusion of education and infrastructure,” said Ryan. “I thank both Durham College and Centennial College for providing our residents, as well as students from across the GTA, with the opportunity to enhance their education and gain valuable job skills for today’s marketplace.” Featuring four classrooms, a computer lab, student space and faculty offices, the PLS is conveniently located just north of Highway 401 off Liverpool Road, with direct access to GO Train services and other public transit. College recognized for commitment to living green; sustainable journey well underway Oshawa, Ont. – Durham College announced today that it has received a bronze rating from the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS), offered through the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), for its on-campus sustainability initiatives. The system, a comprehensive tool that compares the sustainability initiatives of participating colleges and universities, focuses on several key areas including education and research; operations; planning; and administration and engagement with each category holding a percentage-based score. The college officially began benchmarking its sustainability initiatives through the STARS program in February 2012 and after several months of data collection received its bronze rating in October. “Durham College is dedicated to ensuring that sustainability guides our decisions and practices in fostering the continued success and well‐being of our students, people and planet,” said Don Lovisa, president, Durham College. “2012 marked the start of our commitment to living green and we are very proud to be given a bronze rating for our first STARS submission. In addition, the STARS process has given us the opportunity to recognize both our weakness and strengths as an institution, knowledge we will use to further our success to date and make improvements going forward. I am confident this is just the beginning of our sustainable journey.” In addition to the ongoing implementation of new measures designed to make it a better environmental steward and champion, Durham College recently introduced a Living Green campaign as well as a Sustainability Committee that is designed to promote awareness, understanding and the practice of environmental, social and economic sustainability with all college stakeholders.
