The Computer Systems Technician – Transfer to Ontario Tech University pathway is designed for students planning to pursue Ontario Tech University’s Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) degree, specializing in Networking and IT Security.
This joint Durham College and Ontario Tech University diploma-to-degree pathway offers a streamlined route to earning both a diploma and a degree in just four years. Students benefit from an integrated learning experience that combines applied, hands-on college training with the academic depth of university study.
Throughout the program, students build strong technical foundations in computer systems, networking, and IT infrastructure while progressing toward advanced study in information technology. This unique pathway provides access to two complementary learning environments, preparing graduates for in-demand roles in networking, cybersecurity, and systems administration.
Durham College’s (DC) Computer Systems programs have been strengthened through a donation from General Motors (GM) of approximately 100 Cisco switches, providing students with access to industry-grade networking equipment and hands-on learning experiences. The partnership began when a Computer Systems Technology student completing a co-op placement at GM recognized the potential impact the equipment could have at DC. This student-led collaboration highlights the value of industry partnerships in creating meaningful opportunities and preparing graduates for careers in IT and engineering.

The Computer Systems Technician program at Durham College (DC), in collaboration with Ontario Tech University (Ontario Tech), offers a unique opportunity for students to begin their journey toward Ontario Tech's Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) degree. Designed for those interested in specializing in Networking and IT Security, this diploma-to-degree pathway integrates theoretical knowledge and practical skills, providing a direct route from diploma to degree within a four-year timeframe.
Through a blend of courses from both institutions, students develop a comprehensive understanding of computer systems, network management, and IT security while benefiting from the resources and academic support of two connected post-secondary environments. The curriculum builds foundational knowledge in computer hardware, network management, and systems analysis, alongside specialized learning that supports progression into advanced university study.
The program includes embedded bridging courses required for admission to the degree. Students who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 in each semester of DC studies and achieve no grade below C in Ontario Tech courses may apply directly to Year 3 of the degree program.
Students in this pathway register at both DC and Ontario Tech. Ontario Tech courses are delivered in the evening, and academic calendars, including Reading Week, differ between institutions. Students attend all scheduled classes and navigate two learning systems across the program. Academic planning support is provided throughout the pathway.
Students complete the Ontario Colleges using the CSTU application code. Upon meeting selection criteria, students may be eligible to continue into Ontario Tech’s Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) degree.
This pathway also provides flexibility in progression. Students may transition into the college-only Computer Systems Technician diploma, transfer into related Durham College programs after first semester or first year, or exit with a Computer Foundations certificate or Computer Systems Technician diploma depending on completion point.

Students may choose to pursue the following industry certifications, which could require additional exams and/or related work experience to qualify:
First-year students enrolled in the Computer Systems Technician transfer to Ontario Tech University program will receive a membership to all seven of Durham Region’s Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade for the duration of their studies, plus an additional year following graduation. DC is proud to be one of the only colleges in Ontario offering students this unique connection to business leaders.

Durham College (DC) offers pre-admission assessment testing to mature domestic applicants to meet admission requirements in English and/or Math. Domestic applicants who are 19 years of age or older as of the start date of their program, and who do not have the required program credit(s), i.e. Grade 12 English and/or Grade 12 Math are eligible to take an admissions assessment test.

In person
Students will come to campus to complete in-person learning requirements. Detailed schedules, with course-specific delivery information, will be available after registration. Courses, course descriptions and delivery formats are subject to change.
Students will also be required to pay an additional tuition fee to Ontario Tech University for one course in Semester 2 and four courses in semesters 3 and 4. Ontario Tech tuition will be charged at the beginning of each semester, starting in Semester 2. The Ontario Tech tuition will be in addition to the figures shown below.

The Computer Systems Technician transfer to Ontario Tech program was created by Durham College and Ontario Tech for individuals who plan to take Ontario Tech’s Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) degree program, majoring in Networking and IT Security. The bridging courses required for admission to the information technology degree program are embedded in the curriculum and if you achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 in each semester of your Durham College courses and no grade below C in your Ontario Tech courses, you can apply directly to the third year of the information technology degree program. In order to participate in the Computer Systems Technician transfer to Ontario Tech program, you are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and complete an application to Ontario Tech in the first semester.
Graduates may choose to return to Durham College to complete an additional year of study in the Computer Systems Technology program. Should they choose to return, they will need to meet with their student advisor to be assessed for credit transfer.
Graduates may also be eligible to apply their academic credits toward further study through Durham College’s partnerships with many other Canadian and international colleges and universities.
