For the second straight year the Durham Lords men’s soccer team took home campus bragging rights after winning the annual Campus Cup exhibition soccer match against the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks by a score of 4-0.

The spirited and intense match, which took place on September 9, is an annual Orientation Week event that is played before hundreds of cheering fans from both institutions at Vaso’s Field at the Oshawa campus.

“It was a big win,” said Benn Vander Eyken, a Human Resources student who plays defence for the squad. “They are a big rival on campus and it was a good start to our season, picking up the win.”

The Lords opened the scoring in the 12th minute of the first half of the game with Jossimar Rodriguez netting a goal with Bryan Manner joining him on the score sheet four minutes later.

Durham’s goalkeeper came up big early in the second half, stopping a UOIT penalty shot and preserving the Lords’ two-goal lead. Agya Oppong-Kyekeyku and Jelani DeJonge then padded the lead with a goal apiece, bringing home the win for the green and gold.

The Lords will open their Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) regular season on Sunday, September 19 at Centennial College and will host their home opener against Fleming College on Saturday, September 25 at Vaso’s Field. The men’s game will start at 2 p.m. following the women’s game. Be sure to cheer on your Durham Lords this season!

Former board chair honoured during 2010 spring convocation ceremony

Oshawa, Ont. – Durham College is extending congratulations to Dr. Peter Zakarow on receiving the college’s first honorary credential during the 2010 spring convocation ceremonies that took place on June 18 at the General Motors Centre.

A native of Oshawa, Dr. Zakarow graduated as a dental surgeon from the University of Toronto in 1956 and soon established a dental practice in his hometown, which he operated for more than 40 years.

“I am very happy to be honoured with this award,” said Dr. Zakarow. “It’s a great accomplishment that I’ll never forget. I never imagined I would receive something of this stature – it is a first for me and for Durham College.”

Dr. Zakarow began his active association with the college in 1982 as a college governor, volunteering and canvassing for donations at numerous fundraisers. After serving as vice-chair of the board of governors, he was named board chair in 1985, a position he held until 1987.

Dr. Zakarow was also a member of the Durham College Dental Advisory Committee and instrumental in implementing the college’s very successful Dental Hygiene program and its curriculum. This included calling on his fellow dentists to help provide dental equipment to students and personally pledging an annual scholarship to outstanding students in the program.

“I am very pleased to present this award to Dr. Zakarow on behalf of the college,” said Don Lovisa, president of Durham College. “Dr. Zakarow is a firm believer in community involvement and has always been extremely dedicated to us. I am thrilled to recognize him as a friend and college champion and thank him for his ongoing support. This is an exciting moment in Durham College’s history.”

In addition to his dedication and commitment to the growth of Durham College, Dr. Zakarow’s widespread community involvement extends to numerous charitable initiatives, committees and associations including the United Way, the Ukrainian Professional and Business Federation and the YMCA.

This is what the familiar Your Student Association website currently looks like. Fresh colours and new features will be added and the site is expected to be up and running by September.

The Your Student Association (SA) of Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is teaming up with the Student Centre to redesign the current SA website. The new site will feature online ticket sales, event registration, a portal for student clubs and more, giving students a more convenient way of connecting with the college and its services.

Currently, there are three separate sites for the campus pub – E.P. Taylor’s Pub and Restaurant, the Student Centre and the SA. This new website will combine everything together as a central space for complete access. SA president, Anthony Boland is excited for the facelift and is looking forward to an increase in student traffic come September. “It’s time for something new,” said Boland. “The current SA website doesn’t meet students needs.”

The new website will also feature an Iphone application that any Iphone user can download to provide them with access to event information and updates. There is no application for Blackberry’s as of yet, but that’s being looked into.

All logos will remain the same but the current website is being revamped with fresh, vibrant colours and a new intuitive look that’s easier for students to navigate services, clubs and agendas. “While our campus is expanding physically, we need to expand our online presence as well,” said Boland. “Social media is at-large now and we’re integrating that into the new site.”

The new site will also be used as a marketing tool to reach out to students and inform them of the current and new services coming to campus such as legal aid and the bike depot.

Partnership will facilitate knowledge and technology related to renewable energy while advancing sustainable building agenda

Oshawa, Ont. – Thanks to a new partnership between Durham College and three other leading Canadian colleges -Lethbridge College in Lethbridge, Alta.; Nova Scotia Community College in Halifax, N.S.; and Okanagan College in Kelowna, B.C. – a commitment to the rapidly evolving fields of sustainable buildings and renewable energy and infrastructure has been launched in order to advance the national and international sustainability agenda.

“This is a great example of co-operation between colleges from across Canada that are focused on training and innovation that is vital to the national sustainability agenda,” said James Knight, president of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges. “Each college is demonstrating leadership in its own region and province. Co-operating and working together with industry and other partners will just add value to their achievements.”

The agreement links together training and projects related to sustainable buildings and renewable energy including program planning and delivery, curriculum development and data sharing.

“A strategic partnership of this calibre is not only beneficial to the sustainability initiatives of our institutes, but to all our students across Canada,” said Tracy Edwards, chief executive officer and president of Lethbridge College.”We’re working towards having a nation of socially responsible citizens and couldn’t be more excited at the possibilities.”

The consortium will also see the colleges work together to plan and co-ordinate applied innovation projects and utilize connections with various industry and federal and provincial agencies.

For example, Durham College is working hard to address the growing need for skilled professionals in the renewable energy field through a more than $30 million three-phase expansion of its Whitby campus. Phase 1, already completed, includes a partnership with the Durham Strategic Energy Alliance (DSEA); new energy programs, classrooms and labs; a research incubation centre developed in partnership with the DSEA and UOIT; and a living laboratory approach that includes solar water heating and solar cell systems, geothermal technology, wind turbines and electrical and energy auditing.

“Durham College is committed to a vision that will see new opportunities for students in areas that are critical to the local, provincial and national economies with renewable and sustainable energy established as a clear priority,” said Don Lovisa, president of Durham College. “This partnership will provide an excellent platform for us to share our commitment to these sectors with other like-minded institutions and will allow us to work together on joint curriculum, new transfer opportunities, knowledge sharing and more.”

Phase 2 is increasing the shop area by 20,000 square feet to accommodate new programs and includes the addition of an older home designed to offer students access to dated technology and wiring and the construction of a new home with the latest in energy efficient and environmentally friendly technology. The combination will give students a sense of the changes occurring in the construction and building trades and how to utilize them effectively.

Phase 3 will be a Food and Hospitality Centre that will offer greenhouse gardens; culinary expertise; and agriculture and science laboratories.

“At NSCC we value innovative ideas and actions that engage our students and our communities,” said Don Bureaux, acting president, Nova Scotia Community College. “We are committed to the development of advanced skills training and applied research that create sustainable building and energy solutions; a commitment that is strengthened through partnerships with respected institutions that share our passion.”

In B.C., Okanagan College and the Okanagan Science and Technology Council are partnering on a $1 million project that is receiving 50 per cent of its funding from Environment Canada. The project is focused on reducing greenhouse gases produced through building construction. A federal contribution to the project is also coming from the Asia Pacific Partnership.

“We’re working closely together with each other and with industry in this area,” said Okanagan College President Jim Hamilton. “In many instances, we’re at the leading edge of new sustainable facilities and want to ensure everyone benefits from what the others are learning and teaching.”

The agreement was formed to enable the colleges to work together to meet learner, industry and community needs; share knowledge and resources; expand individual and collective capacities; and test new products and technologies in a variety of settings that reflect Canada’s diverse geography, ecology and climate.

Team Michael “Pinball” Clemons Foundation anxiously awaits the tip-off at the fifth annual All-star Charity Shootout held July 17 at York University.

There is no looking back when proceeds are at stake and that was evident with the effort put forward by both teams at the fifth annual All-Star Charity Shootout (ASCS) held July 17, at York University in Toronto, Ont.

The ASCS is a celebration of Canada at its best, dedicated to raising funds to better our communities. Canada’s best male basketball players from universities and colleges across the country and professional leagues around the world came together with special guest Canadian football legend Michael “Pinball” Clemons. It was a clash of the charities while funds were being raised for War Child Canada and the Michael “Pinball” Clemons Foundation (MPCF).

The event kicked off at 3:30 p.m. when the two teams took to the court. MPCF was down by 10 points with three minutes remaining in the game, but battled back to take the game into overtime and eventually win 107 – 101. This was the MPCF’s first experience with the all-star shootout.

Co-founder of MPCF Natasha Borota says her favourite part of the game was when the team went into overtime and swept up with a win. “Of course we have a winning spirit, but there was no loser at this event,” said Borota. “We all win when helping out our youth.”

Unfortunately, Durham College athlete of the year, Eric Smith was unable to participate due to personal circumstances. Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) all-time leading scorer and DC graduate Anthony Batchelor previously participated in the game in 2006 and 2008.

The day went well and those in attendance enjoyed a free barbecue and prize giveaways with live entertainment from Toronto radio station Flow 93.5 featuring DJ P-Plus. Clemons was accompanied by Alyson Rowe from War Child to give a heartfelt message to the crowd on behalf of their respective charities.

More than $4,000 was raised with 60 per cent of the proceeds going to MPCF as reward for their victory and the remaining 40 per cent directed to War Child.

Oshawa, Ont. – Durham College was pleased to honour Whitby, Ont. native Margaret Campkin at this year’s spring convocation ceremony held on June 18, with a prestigious Alumna of Distinction award at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ont.

A graduate of the Nursing program in 1985, Campkin returned to the college in 2007 as a part-time instructor in the Critical Care Nursing (e-learning) program, while continuing her work at Lakeridge Health in Oshawa where she started in the Medical Isolation unit before moving to the Critical Care department. In March 2009, Campkin was promoted to her current position as patient care manager of Critical Care.

Throughout her career, she has been recognized with numerous awards and fellowships including the Lakeridge Health Corporation Leadership award in 2003. Campkin is also a member of the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario and both the Canadian and American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
