Screencast-O-Matic (Windows, Mac)

Screencast-O-Matic captures webcam video and/or a screen recording. Videos can be saved to the computer as an MP4, or uploaded directly to YouTube. The free version is fully functional, with only a small discrete watermark in the bottom corner. The limitations of the free version are that the recordings can not be longer than 15 minutes and there are no editing tools. Upgrade to the Pro version for $18/year. Registration required.

Microsoft Office 365: PowerPoint (Windows)

Did you know that all Durham College faculty, staff and students have access to Microsoft Office 365? The version of PowerPoint that comes with Office 365 allows for easy screen recordings to capture anything happening on your screen (this feature is currently only available for Windows users). The screen recording can be saved out of PowerPoint as a standalone video file (.mp4). Watch or read to learn more.

Quicktime (Mac)

The standard free version of Quicktime on a Mac can be used to capture screen recordings. Visit How to use QuickTime Player to learn more.

Screencasitfy (Chrome Browser Add-On)

Screencastify is an add-on for the Chrome browser. It is a good option for short recordings with the free version allowing recordings up to 5 minutes in length. It also allows for basic trimming on the start and end of the recordings. For more information visit Screencastify.com.

Camtasia (Windows, Mac)

Camtasia is a screen recorder and video editor all-in-one. It also has the ability to capture webcam video. If you are creating a lot of videos and looking for an all-in-one capture and editing solution, Camtasia might be worth considering. Educational cost is approximately $230
