View Student Engagement Data

Introduction

Student engagement is important because it helps students learn more effectively, remember what they learn, and stay enrolled. When students are engaged, they feel motivated, develop stronger thinking skills, and are more likely to succeed.

Engagement also provides educators with valuable insights into student understanding, allowing them to identify and address misconceptions early. Evidence of engagement can also support conversations about a student’s academic progress. Engagement with course materials is tracked across many tools in DC Connect, offering a clear picture of student interaction with learning resources and activities.

Table of Contents

Content

The Content tool tracks which content topics have been visited by which students. You can review what topics have been visited, by which student, and for how long. Please note that the length of time visited is not necessarily an accurate measure of student effort - simply how long they had DC Connect pages open.

To review this data access the Content tool of your course and click on the Course Options icon (it looks like a cog) near the top left of the page, then choose the View Reports option.

Content - ViewReports

There are two tabs available for you to review; Content, and Users.

Content - Reports

  1. When viewing the Content tab, you can see how many students have visited each Content Module/Topic and the average time spent on each (hours:minutes:seconds)
    • Click directly on the number in the Users Visited column of a module/topic to see details for your class list.

2. When viewing the Users tab, you can see the number of content topics visited by each student.

    • Click directly on a student’s name to see the details of what content has been visited by that student.

It is also possible to view the attempt log for a student’s quiz attempt.

  1. Click the action menu for the appropriate quiz on the Manage Quizzes page
  2. Select the Grade option.
  3. Click directly on the attempt # for the student who’s attempt you wish to review.
  4. Click the Event Log link that subsequently displays. In the popup that appears you will see the time log of events. This will show you how much time (approximately) your student spent on each question.
  5. You can also enable the Session ID and show IP address properties to understand how many sessions (account logins) where active when the assessment was taken, and the location (approximately) of where the student was when they made the attempt. Note that the IP address needs to be looked up using available online tools such as https://whatismyipaddress.com.
