  • Discover how technology is shaping the future of public safety

Law enforcement and public safety careers are evolving quickly as digital tools reshape how professionals collect evidence, document incidents, and conduct online investigations. DC’s Protection, Security and Investigation program introduces students to emerging technologies used in modern law enforcement and public safety, including digital tools for evidence collection, surveillance, online investigations, and other tech-enabled practices.

Through a combination of academic study and practical training, students gain a strong understanding of the many roles within policing, security, investigations, and emergency response, preparing them for a dynamic field with growing opportunities.

  • Transform your business ideas into real opportunities, with a pathway to a university degree

Entrepreneurship is changing rapidly as online sales, social media marketing, and artificial intelligence reshape how businesses start and grow. DC’s Entrepreneurship and Small Business program equips students with hands-on experience, mentorship, and applied learning to navigate this environment.

Students develop AI-supported research skills, collaborate with peers across DC programs to expand their professional networks, and take part in local chamber of commerce events.

For those seeking an academic credential alongside practical experience, the Entrepreneurship and Small Business – Business Transfer to Ontario Tech University Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) pathway allows students to earn both a DC diploma and an Honours Bachelor of Commerce in as little as four years.

  • Build future-ready skills through flexible computer and IT programs

If your interests lie in programming, systems administration, infrastructure, or cloud technologies, DC’s computer programs offer flexible pathways to develop the skills employers value most. These include Computer Programming & Analysis, Computer Programming, Computer Systems Technician, Computer Systems Technology, as well as a pathway that allows students to complete two years at DC and then transfer to Ontario Tech University to finish a four-year Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) degree.

These programs feature a shared first semester for most pathways, allowing students to explore software and hardware before selecting their focus. Emphasizing strong fundamentals, project-based learning, and exposure to multiple programming paradigms and systems technologies, the programs prepare graduates to enter the workforce as adaptable, trainable professionals ready to meet evolving industry demands.

January is the perfect time to begin your studies and get a head start on reaching your goals. Whether your path leads to public safety, entrepreneurship, or the tech sector, DC offers programs designed to support your success.

World Series offers DC students a front-row seat to sport industry experience

Twenty Sport Management and Sport Business Management students from Durham College (DC) gained unforgettable hands-on experience at Game 2 of the 2025 World Series, with an opportunity to work as ambassadors for Major League Baseball (MLB) and Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C).

Through DC’s industry partnerships, students were selected to support the SU2C placard moment, where fans across the stadium joined together in a powerful tribute to honour and remember those affected by cancer. Working alongside MLB staff, Toronto Blue Jays personnel, and event partners, students contributed to fan engagement and live-event execution throughout the day.

“Our students had the opportunity to participate in a showcase event on the global stage,” says Matt Akler, Sport Management professor. “This activation between MLB, the Toronto Blue Jays, SU2C and various other industry partners allowed our students to see what goes on behind the scenes of a major sporting event, interact with staff and fans on a deeply emotional and personal level, and experience the power of sport in bringing people together — all while helping a very worthwhile cause.”

For many, the emotional impact of the experience left a lasting impression.

“Being at the SU2C table where fans could come and write personal messages on the cards they held up at the end of the fifth inning was very powerful and meaningful,” says Gail Cohen, Sport Business Management graduate certificate student. “I had the chance to connect with survivors and, in a few instances, comfort people who had lost loved ones to cancer.”

“Standing in that stadium surrounded by thousands of people reminded me that even in moments of loss, there’s strength in unity,” adds Ashley Comeau, Sport Management advanced diploma student.

This experience reflects Durham College’s commitment to delivering programs that are immersive and industry connected. It also highlights the college’s focus on providing people-centred learning experiences that connect students with their communities and future careers.

“Students didn’t just observe; they contributed,” adds Akler. “They represented DC with professionalism, purpose and heart.”

Finding confidence, creativity, and community at DC

With a new school year underway, we spoke to Durham College (DC) alumni about their experience, what they wish they’d known on the first day of classes, and the advice they’d offer to new students.

Alumni Spotlight: Fanoos Beissed

A graduate of the Cosmetic Techniques and Management program, Fanoos Beissed brought passion and creativity to her studies at Durham College (DC). With the help of supportive professors, she took her artistic ability to a new level and discovered a talent for special effects makeup.

Now a proud DC alumna, she hopes the students following in her footsteps find success in their programs and beyond.

What are some highlights from your experience at DC?

Some of my favourite experiences include connecting with classmates through group projects and campus events, exploring creative opportunities, and enjoying the welcoming campus environment. These moments made my time at DC memorable and helped me grow both academically and personally.

What advice do you have for new DC students?

Stay curious, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. It can feel overwhelming at first, but being proactive, seeking support when you need it, and connecting with peers will make your experience very valuable.

What would you say to new students in the Cosmetics program?

It’s honestly the most beautiful decision you’ll ever make. This program changed my life in ways I never imagined. The professors are kind and truly supportive. They make learning feel so natural and uplifting. You’ll never feel alone in your journey because they’re always there to guide and believe in you. Their guidance made all the difference in my journey, and I truly believe embracing this experience with heart and dedication will empower each one of you to succeed and shine in the beauty world.

My advice is to have fun, be creative, stay curious, practice with passion, and build genuine connections with classmates and incredible profs.

How can students benefit from DC’s Student Services?

I found several Student Services really helpful, including Student Advisors, Career Development, and the Student Academic Learning Services. I also loved the DC Spa, which is a great way to relax while seeing how students in Esthetics – Spa Management and Massage Therapy programs gain real experience. And I’m sure every student needs a little selfcare. Don’t hesitate to visit DC Spa.

What was the best part of your DC experience?

What I loved most about DC was the teachers we had. They weren’t just instructors, they were mentors, supporters, and genuinely kind hearted people who cared about our growth. Their passion, patience, and encouragement created a space where I felt safe to learn, explore, and become confident in my skills. They made the entire experience unforgettable and I really appreciate them.

What will you take away from DC?

I leave Durham College not only with skills and knowledge, but with priceless memories, lifelong friendships, and the feeling of being part of a family that believed in me.

How can students make the most of their time at DC?

Get involved! Join clubs, attend workshops and events, and take advantage of opportunities to meet new people and learn new skills. Balancing academics with social and personal growth helps you make the most of your time here. The more you get involved and build connections, the easier it becomes to find jobs and career opportunities after graduation. Trust me!

The future looks bright for Cloud Computing graduate

Graduate Spotlight: Irene Joseph

Irene Joseph’s time at Durham College (DC) has been marked by academic excellence.

She has excelled in all her courses on the way to earning the “Highest Ranking Graduate” award for the Cloud Computing program, and made the most of DC’s multitude of extra-curricular activities to grow her skills and knowledge.

Before she crosses the stage at Convocation, she tells us what impressed her most about her DC program, shares advice for future students, and more.

Why did you decide to attend Durham College?

Taking a closer look, I would say that Durham College chose me. To borrow a quote from The Alchemist, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” And that’s exactly what happened. It felt like a series of events—perfectly timed and aligned—led me here. Everything clicked into place from the right program and ideal intake to the perfect location, as if I were being guided toward a path I was always meant to take. It wasn’t just a decision—it felt like destiny.

What was your DC experience like?

Honestly, it was a rollercoaster of victories, plot twists, and occasional identity crises. But I discovered a lot, made some wonderful friends, and consumed an alarming amount of coffee. I felt truly blessed to get amazing support from faculty and classmates, which made the tough days manageable.  Eventually, the journey evolved from academics to growing and learning my potential and implementing strategies, and the occasional panicking before the notorious assignment deadline at 11:59 p.m. Would I do it all over again? Absolutely.

How did your DC program prepare you for your career?

My program was intensive and well crafted. Over these eight months, I was led through an array of courses and tools by industry professionals that prepared me to stand out in the crowd of career aspirants. It showed me the current market trends and ways to tackle them with hands-on experience. It didn’t just teach me what to do, but why it matters, which gave me a clearer sense of direction moving forward.

Would you recommend your DC program to other students?

I would recommend my program, but not for the faint-hearted. If you are ready to strap up your boots and are determined to let nothing stand in the way of your learning and growth, then this is the program for you. It’s challenging, fast-paced, and packed with industry-relevant skills rendered by remarkable professionals.

What is your advice for future students?

Choose a program you’re genuinely passionate about. I’ve seen too many students pick something based on salary charts or other perks, only to end up dreading every day for the foreseeable future. Life’s too short to be stuck doing something you don’t enjoy. As Marc Anthony once said, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

What do you love most about DC?

My best memories of DC are the happening PIT (with the lonesome student playing the piano in the corner and the free food), the crazy marketplace, the gym that I vowed to visit three times a week but never got around to, the Tims with the stupefying queues and the library I never visited.

How do you feel about graduating?

It feels glorious. It’s an incredible feeling to know, with absolute certainty, that I crossed this tide. And what makes it even more meaningful is the thought that along this journey, I didn’t just achieve something for myself; there’s a chance I may have inspired someone else along the way, too.

What are your future goals?

My immediate goal is to dip my toes into the real world and spin off my career. I would love to be part of an organization that contributes to our community, and in the long term, I aspire to build innovative, scalable tech solutions that make life easier. And one day, I dream of sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace in the winters of Canada rather than trudging to college to attend my midterms.

Cybersecurity expert Randy Baret on how Durham College’s graduate certificate helped him launch his career in Canada

For Durham College (DC) alum and cybersecurity professional Randy Baret, earning a Cybersecurity graduate certificate in 2023 was a pivotal step in launching a successful and rewarding career in Canada.

Baret now lives in Saskatoon where he serves as Cybersecurity Manager for VLT Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC). Reflecting on his time at DC, he credits the program with equipping him for success in his career.

“The program’s emphasis on practical, hands-on learning through industry-standard labs and case studies allowed me to develop and refine the skills necessary to identify vulnerabilities and implement effective security measures,” he said. “Working alongside peers from diverse backgrounds, we tackled complex cybersecurity challenges, which not only enhanced my technical skills but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.”

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Baret was an accomplished cybersecurity professional before pursuing DC’s graduate certificate. He holds a Master’s degree in cybersecurity from Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo, a diploma in cybersecurity from Florida International University and several industry-recognized certifications.

He served as Chief Information Officer at a private company in the Dominican Republic where he was responsible for safeguarding critical digital assets and developing security strategies. Seeking international exposure and advanced knowledge, he chose DC’s Cybersecurity program to further enhance his expertise.

His practical advice for students looking pursue a similar path is to embrace lifelong learning and embrace hands-on experiences.

“The cybersecurity landscape is ever evolving. Stay updated with the latest threats, technologies, and best practices by pursuing continuous education and relevant certifications,” he said. “Durham College’s emphasis on practical learning provides a solid foundation. Engage deeply in lab sessions and real-world projects to hone your skills.”

Baret also believes networking actively with peers, instructors and industry professionals and seeking experiential learning opportunities like internships and co-op are essential for career success.

“Take advantage of Durham College’s resources, such as the Centre for Cybersecurity Innovation, which offers applied research services and education in cybersecurity.”

Baret points out that soft skills are an important component of career success.

“Technical expertise is crucial, but soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving are equally important. These skills will enhance your effectiveness in collaborative environments.”
