Global Curriculum Conference Research Project

By Teresa Goff, MAD faculty

This project arose from a mandatory College Teaching Certificate course for DC faculty members, which uses the DC Global Class to focus on how faculty can design and develop curriculum that ensures the personal and professional success of DC students in a globalized world. The project design was developed through follow-up discussions identifying a need to foster global conversation by leveraging the international relationships established by DC faculty members using the Global Class to enhance global competency and intercultural skills of students.

Project lead: Teresa Goff, School of Media, Art and Design

Research Assistants: Soyra Mokashi, Fiona Campbell, Casandra Whyte (Global Class Assistant)

International Partners: TU Dublin (Ireland), Christ University (India)

Canadian Partners: Centennial College, Georgian College

FINAL REPORT: https://sway.office.com/kVKeWY9zAHPnes81?ref=Link

This project arose from a mandatory College Teaching Certificate course for DC faculty members, which uses the DC Global Class to focus on how faculty can design and develop curriculum that ensures the personal and professional success of DC students in a globalized world. The project design was developed through follow-up discussions identifying a need to foster global conversation by leveraging the international relationships established by DC faculty members using the Global Class to enhance global competency and intercultural skills of students.

The original project goal was to hold an international conference on curriculum development; however, this plan was impacted by the pandemic and the closure of campus space including the Global Class. The conference was put on hold and the project was redesigned to focus on exemplary practices for preparing and producing a remote conference on global engagement and curriculum development. Research assistants undertook a literature review and created a research paper titled “Online Conferencing to Develop a Global Curriculum”. Next, the intention is to conduct an online survey of DC faculty who have hosted classes using the Global Class. Virtual focus groups will be held involving internationally based faculty members who have participated previously in DC Global Class activities. These activities will enable the team to:

  • Design a remote conference that is sustainable and equitable by using DC’s Global Class
  • Lead the way in global curriculum design and development by curating discussions that engage faculty and students in dialogue, debate and creative development
  • Describe ways a postsecondary institution can contribute to and reflect the internationalization of campus communities.
  • Identify opportunities and challenges to developing curriculum that ensures the personal and professional success of students on pathways of learning and self-discovery in a global world.
  • Foster international collaborations for curriculum development and design

Library Spotlight – DC Connect Online Modules & New Online Resources

To support online and blended course delivery, Librarians have developed three e-learning modules in DC Connect. The text, images, videos, interactive quizzes and activities included in these modules support the development of information literacy skills in your course so students are prepared to find, evaluate and ethically use information from a variety of sources in their assignments. These three modules can be used together or individually as part of your curriculum:

  • Introduction to Information Literacy: Introduce your students to the various types of information sources available in the Campus Library and beyond – and teach them how to find the right sources to meet their needs. This module covers all stages of the research process, including choosing a topic, planning a search strategy, reading and creating citations, and selecting and evaluating appropriate academic sources.
  • Searching Omni for Books, Articles and More: Teach your students the basics of searching for information sources in Omni, the Library’s academic search tool. This module covers keyword search strategies, filters for refining results, and specialized tools in Omni for creating citations, saving searches and results, and accessing full text for online resources.
  • Advanced Searching for Research Articles: Help your students develop advanced search skills to find research articles in the Library’s subject databases. This module covers advanced topics like developing a research question, keyword and subject heading searches and advanced database search features.

Your students can self-register in DC Connect by clicking Self-Registration and selecting Library Online from the list of self-registration course options. The Library Online modules include completion badges in the awards section that can be submitted for participation marks. You can also download and import the modules into your own DC Connect courses to monitor student progress and achievement in your course’s gradebook.

New Online Resources

To support faculty’s transition to online and blended learning, the Library team has acquired a number of new online resources:

  • Safety Hub: Engaging workplace safety training video content. 107 videos covering topics including safety basics, hazard management, shop safety, power tools, welding safety, personal protective equipment and more.

Showcasing Our Exemplary Faculty and Their Practices

Faculty at Durham College have found innovative ways to engage, teach and assess our students as they transitioned to remote delivery. Although they teach in a broad range of disciplines and need to instill industry-specific skills and knowledge, the common principles underlying our faculty’s approaches are student-centredness and social connectedness.

In these three clips, faculty describe their approaches to remote learning, exploring re-engagement and fostering online communities. Students have remained connected to the course and with each other, and have learned the skills that are sought by employers. These featured faculty at Durham College demonstrate how they’ve supported their students remotely while exemplifying adaptability, creativity and digital competency that are essential for the evolving world of work.

Want to know more about the tools these faculty used? Check out our resources on Teams, Virtual Classroom, H5P Studio, creating your own videos and screen-captures and all things EdTech and remote delivery.

Experiential Learning – CityStudio & Riipen integration

New ways to connect students with industry and community organizations through work-integrated learning in 2020/21:

  • CityStudio Durham: The Region of Durham, in partnership with Durham Regional Police Service, is launching an initiative for municipal staff to engage with post-secondary students and faculty to generate ideas and co-create solutions for government services and community benefits. Through CityStudio, municipal staff will identify and develop project concepts that are matched with DC programs and courses through class projects, applied research, field placements or other opportunities. To view available municipal project ideas and start collaborating with the Region:
    • Register an account in the CityStudio Durham web portal (here) using your DC email address.
  • Visit the CityStudio Durham website to view municipal project ideas and, if you see a project of interest, connect with the Region.
  • DC Project Marketplace (aka Riipen): Riipen is an online project-based experiential learning platform. First implemented at DC in December 2018, here’s what’s new for 2020/21:
    • You can invite industry and community organizations to join the DC Project Marketplace at no cost to facilitate collaboration with DC faculty and students. This flyer can be shared with your external contacts. Once they create an account, they’ll be able to post project opportunities and view courses posted by DC staff. Examples of projects currently available in the marketplace:
    • Riipen D2L integration now available: DC faculty can now embed Riipen courses directly into their D2L courses providing a single sign-on (SSO) experience for students. See instructions on Riipen’s help site here.

If you have any questions about any of these opportunities, please contact Amanda Brown in the Office of Research, Innovation & Entrepreneurship at amanda.brown@durhamcollege.ca.
