Topic for discussion:  Mental Health – Keep the Conversation Going

Please join co-hosts Don Lovisa and Lon Appleby for a special alumni event as we keep the important conversation going about mental health. DC graduates, Lori Lane Murphy and Chris Bovie, DCSI Executive Chairperson, Jenna Peace, and DC Mental Health Nurse, Marta Gozdzik will discuss the different layers of stigma and barriers in mental health, mental health support and their personal stories about mental wellness.

Participants

Lori Lane Murphy

’88 Public Relations grad, Lori is an accomplished storyteller, speaker, facilitator, author and mental health advocate.  She recently started a weekly chat show on YouTube called “Mental Hellness”. The focus of her work is to use her lived experience with mental illness to help reduce stigma and to spread the message of hope.

Chris Bovie

’87 Journalism grad, Chris is the External Relations Officer for Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. His work includes community and government relations, awareness, education and helping to reduce stigma and discrimination of mental illness.  Chris will speak to the many different layers of stigma in mental health and barriers for mental health and stigma/discrimination when it comes to housing, income and work, education and the health system and an overview of where to go for help.

Jenna Peace

Jenna is the Executive Chairperson at DCSI and currently enrolled in the Public Relations program at DC. As a student, Jenna is also involved with Enactus DC and ISL. Jenna believes that we need to keep working on ending the stigma around mental health and understand that seeking help doesn’t mean illness since mental health challenges are something everyone will experience in their lifetime. As she deals with her own everyday mental health challenges, she’s eager to keep the conversation going by sharing her stories.

Marta Gozdzik

Marta is a Mental Health Nurse at the Campus Health and Wellness Centre. She joined Durham College in 2015, supporting the mental health needs of Durham College students. In her role, she provides assessment, triage, and nursing care of Durham College students who are seeking mental health care. She also supports mental health data collection needs at the Campus Health and Wellness Centre. Marta continues to practice nursing on the inpatient adolescent medicine and psychiatry unit at The Hospital for Sick Children. She is also a student in the Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology program at Yorkville University.
